Kabanya Chemise’s Skies are Blue
Posted in music on January 8th, 2010 by Rovi

So I woke up to one of the most beautiful voices in the music industry some time ago and it was no other than Kabanya Chemise singing her new solo, Sky Blue. From what I heard, she was a beautiful composer, singer and writer at the early age of 5 when she started studying classical piano. She was a genius, a child prodigy with the musical gift of Einstein and Picaso back then, so by age 12 she was the minister of music for her church. She was the top dog in her field. That is no surprise, because I was amazed as she sung a beautiful, sultry, jazzed up whoo…. whooo over her solo on Good Day Xtra a few nights ago. She has a beautiful rounded out tone and knows how to hit you where your body needs it. She is a classical musician with more than 20 years of training who knew how to make a song move with your vibe. I saw it. I heard it that night.

"Sky Blue" - Kabanya-Chemise

Singer-songwriter Kabanya-Chemise has worked alongside artists from Usher and Jennifer Holliday to Kurt Carr and Ann Nesby. She now takes her turn in the spotlight with “Sky Blue,” fusing gospel, R&B, and her classical training with the '70s AM radio pop and soul sounds with which she grew up in Albany, Georgia.

“Sky Blue” is the first single from Kabanya’s debut CD Mosaic, due out this spring. The performance opens with menacing rumbles of thunder and a cloudburst of rain. Kabanya follows with gently rocking riffs about life’s inevitable ups and downs, “even if you live right,” but reminds us that God can “turn your midnight blue to sky blue.” The neo-soul '70s vibe was so deliciously retro that by the end of the song, when the birds are chirping, I could see in my mind’s eye Minnie Riperton somewhere above, smiling with satisfaction.
